They say distance makes the heart grow fonder, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with the ladies of The View. When the topic turned to President Donald Trump labeling COVID-19 as the “Chinese virus,” things got heated between Whoopi Goldberg and Meghan McCain.

Whoopi moderated from home on Wednesday. Meghan was in-studio with the other hosts. Guest host Dan Abrams noted that what the virus is called isn’t as important as how it’s handled. Sara Haines felt the name politicized the issue.

“As we’ve seen, people start punching people, Asian folks, out,” Whoopi chimed in. “We need to stop labeling it like they did it to us. Mother Nature really did this to us.”

Meghan interrupted Whoopi to point out that the virus did originate in China. “I think if the left wants to focus on P.C. labeling this virus, it’s a great way to get Trump re-elected,” Meghan said. “I don’t have a problem with people calling it whatever they want. It’s a deadly virus that did originate in Wuhan [China].”

“We shouldn’t be pointing fingers at people,” Whoopi replied. “We shouldn’t stereotype it.”

Meghan took advantage of Whoopi’s absence to start talking over others, reiterating that she’s “happy” with people calling it the “China virus.” As she continued to talk over everyone, Whoopi made disgruntled faces on camera.

“I know that you can’t hear me, I can see that you can’t hear me, Whoopi,” Meghan said, noting the technical difficulties of Whoopi moderating from home, before continuing her rant. She claimed China was spreading misinformation about the US military and the coronavirus and wasn’t going to let them “get away with it.”

Sunny Hostin and Whoopi then tried to chime in. Meghan snarkily said, “I can’t tell who’s yelling at me right now.”

“No, no, no one is yelling,” Whoopi replied. “I’m just trying to make sure you can hear me.”

The heated conversation cut to commercial, as it has many times before. Whoopi and Meghan disagree on virtually everything, but they insist their love and friendship overcomes that all. The message is wonderful, but it isn’t what we see on TV day after day.
