President Donald Trump’s campaign managers are no strangers to taking cheap shots at 2020 Democratic nominee Joe Biden. But one member of the campaign arguably reached a new low on Sunday by mocking Biden while he was visiting the grave of his late family members.
Francis Brennan, director of strategic response for Trump’s 2020 campaign, tweeted a video of Biden walking through a cemetery and waving at reporters who asked him to talk to them.
“Joe Biden just keeps meandering along,” Brennan tweeted alongside the video, seemingly criticizing the presidential nominee for avoiding reporters.
The video was reportedly taken in Wilmington, Delaware, where Biden attended a service at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church and then went to visit the graves of his family members, including his son Beau, first wife Neilia, and daughter Naomi. Beau died of brain cancer in 2015, while Neilia and Naomi died in a car accident in 1972.
One might think a man visiting his dead family members following a church service would be a sacred moment not to be used for a petty insult on Twitter. But not for Brennan.
Twitter users almost unanimously slammed the Trump staffer, and his tweet got ratioed into oblivion. As of Monday morning, the ratio currently sits at roughly 31,000 replies and 3,300 likes.
“It’s not surprising that a top Trump campaign ‘strategist’ is making fun of the solemnity of Trump’s opponent leaving a Church Service today,” Twitter user @GodcallsBS replied. “What is surprising is that this dolt thinks it’s smart to draw attention to where Trump is at this moment and it’s not church.” (According to CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller, Trump was golfing on Sunday afternoon.)
“Here’s Trump’s ‘director of strategic response’ trying to trash Biden for not talking to reporters…while he was visiting his son’s grave,” author and columnist Mark Harris tweeted. “Our hope may lie in the fact that Team Trump boasts not only some of the worst people alive, but the stupidest.”
Even Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) condemned Brennan, writing, “It’s a cemetery. Where his son is buried. Are you human?”
Many people also took issue with Brennan’s use of the word “meandering,” as Biden appeared to be walking briskly and purposefully—unlike Trump when he inched down a ramp at West Point in June.
As of Monday morning, Brennan has yet to clarify or delete his tweet and is now questioning Biden about China on Twitter.
