For more than six months, Kimberly Gough has been living on the streets of east Indianapolis… a neighborhood that has historically seen the impacts of crime and violence.

Though Kimberly has practically nothing to her name, she spends her free-time making trinkets to hand out to strangers in their car or on the streets. She doesn’t ask for donations; she simply likes to make people smile with her colorful DIY flower bouquets, paper crosses and plastic rosaries.

Sadly, her kind efforts are frequently ignored or rejected. “I’ve had a kid give me the middle finger. An elderly lady cussed me out for trying to give her a cross,” Kimberly told WXIN. “That’s what I get every time I come out.”

Enter Montice Smith — a complete stranger who encountered Kimberly as he left a store near the corner where she likes to hand out flowers. Montice stopped to give her a couple of bucks, but never expected her to hand him a flower in return. The simple yet powerful gesture overwhelmed him. Kimberly was so kind and generous despite such adversity.

That night, Montice couldn’t stop thinking about the woman. “Even the money that she makes she’s using it to make these items,” he said. “It touched me.”

Montice and Kimberly didn’t know it at the time they met, but an amazing friendship was about to take shape. Montice found himself returning to that same street corner, day after day… and this time, he was the one returning the kindness.
