New Year’s Day is a time to spend hungover, thinking about all of the terrible decisions you made in 2018 and how you’re going to change up your life in this new year. When the cabin fever hits, a quick trip to the stores can be the perfect way to distract yourself and get some fresh air — unless you want to cope with some funny jokes from the comfort of your couch. Luckily for you, many places will be open for you to make your first purchases of 2019.

So, which stores are open on New Year’s Day?

Granted, many places are closed on New Year’s Day, so that their employees can enjoy the first day of the year with their families and friends. If you need to do any banking with tellers, you might have to wait another day for your bank to be open. But many other stores are opening their doors for first-day-of-the-year shoppers.

Walmart

Walmart stores will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, so you can stock up on groceries, electronics and all-around discounted stuff.

Home Depot

If you’re locked out, need a new vanity, or are looking for some gardening tools to get your flowers 2019-ready, you’re in luck. Although some Home Depots are closing early on New Year’s Eve, they’ll be open on New Year’s Day.

If you wanted Costco’s hotdogs, I can offer Swedish meatballs as a counter. Ikea will be open until 9 p.m. for you to buy all of the DIY furniture and apartment accessories you need.

Maxinistas, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re looking for a new discount bag or boots, or just want to browse the sales rack, T.J. Maxx will be open on the first day of the year. Just be sure to check your local store because hours vary nationwide.

If you want a new set of basics to start off your year, may we recommend stopping by the Gap. After all, everyone needs a fresh white t-shirt. From underwear to pretty dresses and blazers for work, Gap’s got you covered. Luckily, they stay open on New Year’s Day so you can go all out with the extra money Santa left in your stocking.

Did you resolve to actually start working out in 2019? Don’t let the momentum pass and grab yourself a new pair of sneakers and sweatpants today because Dick’s Sporting Goods will be open on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Luckily, most of their locations will be open on New Year’s Day, but since it’s a franchise, there’s no company policy so you might be better off calling ahead. We wouldn’t want to to get to the drive-thru and have to turn around without your McNuggets.

Dunkin’ [Donuts]

OK I really can’t get down with their name change, but if you want a yummy cup of joe to start off your day, and a munchkin (or 50), Dunkin’ will be open on New Year’s Day, for the most part. Call ahead though, because like McDonald’s (eyeroll), hours vary from location to location.

Burger King

Who’s feeling a Whopper? TBQH this article is making me super hungry. If you want some onion rings at whatever time on New Year’s Day, stop at your local BK. They’ll be open!

Denny’s

Digging some breakfast for dinner? Denny’s will be open for all your pancake, milkshake, hamburgers, salads and sandwiches on New Year’s Day.

Chili’s

If you don’t feel like cooking for the whole family on the first day of the year, and you just can’t get that “baby back, baby back, baby back” song out of your head, grab some ribs and snacks at Chili’s.

Applebee’s

If you’re jonesing for some buffalo wings, chicken tenders or “Oriental” chicken salad (whatever that means), Applebee’s got your back this New Year’s Day. Also, if you want to ring 2019 in there, no one’s stopping you. Most Applebee’s restaurants will be open New Year’s Eve as well.
