Once in a while, a commercial comes along that gets everyone talking. This year, it was Peloton’s holiday commercial. The buzz around the ad wasn’t the good kind, however. In fact, it was quite the opposite, with reports indicating the negative backlash caused a 10% price drop in their stocks.
If you haven’t seen the ad yet, allow us to fill you in. The 30-second spot, titled “The Gift That Gives Back“, features a woman who was gifted a Peloton bike by her husband. You see bits of her creating a video diary about her Peloton experience, during which two things become clear. For one, this woman doesn’t exactly seem to be enjoying this workout at any point. Also, her fitness journey doesn’t really yield much of a transformation, given she’s already pretty thin.
Those points were just some of the many that people harped on when criticizing the ad, which went viral in the worst way. Now, the actress who plays the Peloton recipient, Monica Ruiz, is speaking out about why she thinks the ad missed the mark.
