Wendy Figueroa couldn’t believe it when she tested positive for COVID-19 — while she was eight months pregnant.

Two days later, Wendy went into labor six weeks early in the unit dedicated to coronavirus patients.

She hoped and prayed her daughter, Alexa, would not be born with the virus. However, her worst fears became reality when Alexa was also diagnosed with COVID-19 at birth.

What makes baby Alexa’s case so different is that there was evidence of the virus inside the placenta.

Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where Wendy delivered her baby, believes Alexa may be the first known case of a baby infected while still inside the womb.

Alexa needed intensive care and Wendy needed to remain isolated beyond the NICU. To keep the mother and baby bonded, the nurses showered Wendy with photos of her daughter and set up a live feed from the baby’s room.

But nothing was more important to Wendy than getting to hold her newborn baby for the first time.

And she’d have to wait 20 days to do that…
