Tyra Winters is a 17-year-old student at Rockwall High School in Texas. She’s also on her school’s cheerleading team… and she can now add “hometown hero” to her list of credentials.

The students at Rockwall High recently celebrated homecoming with a festive parade. Tyra was on a float with her cheerleading squad and the football team when chaos broke out in the crowd.

The team heard a woman screaming for help while rumors of a child in trouble quickly spread.

Nicole Hornback’s son, Clarke, was choking and each second was more dire than the last. “I just literally was holding him out and just running through the crowd trying to hand him off to anyone,” she told ABC News.

Tyra quickly scanned the parade-goers on the ground below and spotted a two-year-old boy whose face was bright red and already turning a terrifying shade of purple.

Without so much as a moment of hesitation, the quick-thinking team leapt off the float and sprinted into the crowd — grabbing the child from his desperate mother’s arms.

Watch the video below to see how Tyra became a hero that day, thanks to her own mother’s life-saving lesson.
