Prince Harry and Prince William have never really opened up about the 1997 death of their mother, Princess Diana. And while the rest of the world loved her and mourned her loss, Harry and William were obviously hit the hardest. When you think about it, it’s a little sad that they haven’t really had a chance to openly grieve losing someone so important to them.

Sadly, it seems like they haven’t really privately had that opportunity, either. While giving a speech at a JPMorgan event in Miami, Prince Harry touched a little on what this loss has meant for him.

A source says that “Harry spoke about mental health and how he has been in therapy for the past three years to try to overcome the trauma of losing his mother. He [Harry] talked about how the events of his childhood affected him and that he has been talking to a mental health professional.”

It turns out, that’s not all that Harry opened up about. He also spoke about the topic that was probably on everyone’s minds: Megxit, or the decision he and Meghan Markle made to leave most of their royal life behind in the UK.

The source shared that “He [Harry] talked about how the events of his childhood affected him and that he has been talking to a mental health professional. Harry also touched on Megxit, saying while it has been very difficult on him and Meghan, he does not regret their decision to step down as senior royals because he wants to protect his family. He does not want Meghan and their son Archie to go through what he did as a child.”

While we will probably never know exactly what Harry and William went through as kids, it’s easy to imagine that the loss of their mother caused a lot of pain for the two young boys and that this pain continues to be a presence in their lives, particularly as they are raising families of their own.

Fortunately for Harry, he is now making sure he gets the help and treatment that he needs. The trauma of Diana’s death will probably never leave him, or really ever leave the hearts of so many who loved her.
