Shirley Curry, the 84-year-old YouTuber best known to the internet as Skyrim Grandma, announced earlier this month that she would be taking a break from streaming on her channel and would scale back from streaming upon her return.
In her vlog, she mentioned her stress levels and blood pressure were far too high and attributed some of that to comments she had been receiving on the platform. She said she would be deleting most comments upon her return.
Curry mentioned that the comments she was receiving would often patronize her, as people would try to explain to her basic mechanics of a game she had been playing for years. She also said people also would try to recommend games to her which she had no interest in playing and criticized her playstyle. “I’m not enjoying recording anymore,” she said. “I feel like I’m under a microscope.”
She later mentioned that she was disappointed that viewers were evidently not following the roleplay stories she was attempting to create in her videos, and eventually sighed, “I’m just gonna play… play whatever.”
The story gained much more attention after VG247 published an article several weeks after Curry’s video was published, saying Curry received “an onslaught” of patronizing comments. This type of sentiment was echoed in stories published by PC Gamer, Metro and Kotaku. However, Curry took issue with the way the article was phrased, writing, “there was NO ‘onslaught’ of patronizing comments!!! But yes I am scaling back my videos due to health. Most people on my channel are very nice. I do wish you would delete this so it would go away.”

The story was covered in a video by YongYea, who mentioned that the problems Curry described in her video were less “trolling” and more the typical sort of feedback one gets from being a streamer. This take was endorsed by Curry herself, who wrote “This is the most honest and UN-exaggerated breakdown review of my video out there!!! Hope people will watch this and it will off-set all the exaggerations in a couple of other videos going around out there.”
