More school districts are taking various tactics in the effort to make families pay back their child’s school lunch debts. From throwing out students’ lunches to holding graduation day over their heads, “lunch shaming” has become a real problem.

The Wyoming Valley West School District in Pennsylvania is currently trying to collect more than $22,000 owed in outstanding lunch debts. It claims to have already sent multiple letters home with students, but that no payments were made. So, as a last-ditch effort to grab the parents’ attention, the district sent a new letter home to about 1,000 students with a threat to send parents who don’t provide their kids with food to Dependency Court.

But it’s another threat included in the message that’s causing a major backlash.

Many parents, school board members and readers across the country were shocked by the letter’s tone and two sentences in particular. Since the letter was distributed, the district has reportedly gotten back more than $500 of the $22,000 owed in lunch money. However, critics of the letter call it “unnecessary” and that it’s “terrorizing” children and families.

Watch the video below to see why this controversial letter has so many people up in arms.
