Charlene Reebe manages the Perkins Restaurant & Bakery in Lacey, New Jersey. While cleaning up for the night, Charlene noticed a small Walmart bag sitting on the ground near a trashcan. She wondered why it wasn’t just placed inside the can instead, so she opened up the bag to investigate.

Inside she found a handwritten letter on looseleaf paper, two 32-ounce bottles of Heinz ketchup and a Walmart receipt showing the purchase of the condiments.

The author of the letter confessed to stealing the ketchup bottles a few weeks prior and had quietly returned to the restaurant in the effort to right her wrongs.

“A few weeks ago, I had taken one of your ketchup bottles off the table because for some odd reason I thought it’d be ‘risky,’” the letter read.

It’s not that the employees even noticed the missing ketchup bottles. And the Heinz bottles stolen by the thief were much bigger than the ones Perkins puts on its tables for customers.

As it turned out, the thief was hit with a wave of remorse after an incident of bad karma — and was convinced her (or his) bad luck stemmed from stealing the ketchup.

The owner of the restaurant ended up posting the note on Facebook, along with a public message to the person who returned the ketchup…
