Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has tested positive for the coronavirus, making him the latest politician, but the first senator, to contract the disease.

Paul, according to a statement on Sunday from his Twitter account, opted to take the test despite being asymptomatic “out of an abundance of caution.”

“Senator Rand Paul has tested positive for COVID-19. He is feeling fine and is in quarantine,” the tweet said. “He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events. He was not aware of any direct contact with any infected person.”

The statement went on to note that Paul intended to return to the Senate following quarantine and that he had already been working remotely for the past 10 days.

Paul’s announcement comes just days after Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) and Rep. Ben McAdams, (D-Utah) likewise revealed that they had tested positive for the disease.
