A close family friend has revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were already strongly considering leaving the royal family when their son Archie was born in May 2019.
The friend has told People that by Archie’s May 6 birth date, “they knew they were going to hit the nuclear button.”
The couple were already working through a lot at the time. There were reports flying that Prince William and Prince Harry were locked in a rift. Meghan had endured a tremendous amount of racism and attacks on her character since it was announced she and Harry were dating. The friend speculates that Meghan was just the type of person Harry needed.
“When Meghan came around and she was interested in making changes, he welcomed it,” the friend explains. Once Meghan got pregnant, the couple’s focus shifted to “doing what’s right for their family.”
This news hardly comes as a surprise to fans of the royal pair, who have been speculating that the two would bring about dramatic changes to the royal family for some time. Prince Harry himself has speculated about his role in the monarchy in the past, even going so far as to explain that he wasn’t sure anyone in the family really wanted to be part of it.
In 2017, he explained, “We are involved in modernising the British monarchy. We are not doing this for ourselves but for the greater good of the people. Is there any one of the royal family who wants to be king or queen? I don’t think so, but we will carry out our duties at the right time.”
He also speculated that his time as a focus of attention may draw to a close in the future. “I feel there is just a smallish window when people are interested in me before [William’s children Prince George and Princess Charlotte] take over, and I’ve got to make the most of it.”
