Flying an airplane can be scary, but thankfully pilots are some of the most skilled and able people out there. Just ask pilot David Acklam, who struggled to make an emergency landing without power.

Luckily, he did have some help. Washington State Patrol Trooper Clint Thompson was driving on Pacific Avenue in Pierce County when he saw the plane getting closer and closer to the street.

Clint decided to turn on his lights and dashboard camera and follow the plane. He blocked traffic behind him as the plane approached the road. He watched closely as the plane started to come down near a busy intersection. Thankfully, it came to the ground at a red light just ahead of that intersection.

“In 21 years, I would say that’s the first time I ever went across the radio and said that there’s a plane that landed on Pacific Avenue,” Clint told KIRO.

David did the best he could in the situation, but he was immensely grateful for Clint’s help. “Probably saved me from either serious injury or death,” he reflected. “And somebody else from getting into a car crash with a plane. So thanks to the state patrol, and it’s a good day to be alive.”

Drivers were amazed by the incident that played out ahead of them. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating to determine what went wrong.
