People around the world are digesting the news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are looking to take a step back from their roles as senior members of the royal family. It’s a bold move, although Harry and Meghan seem to have a plan that sees to it that they get the peace and tranquility they need without abandoning their obligations or the family altogether.
In the wake of Harry and Meghan’s mind-blowing statement, Buckingham Palace released its own statement regarding the decision. “Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”
While Queen Elizabeth seems to be taking a measured approach to figuring it out, some of her loyal subjects are not. Take, for example, Piers Morgan. The conservative Good Morning Britain cohost spent the better part of the time since the news broke slamming the couple on Twitter.
“People say I’m too critical of Meghan Markle – but she ditched her family, ditched her Dad, ditched most of her old friends, split Harry from William & has now split him from the Royal Family. I rest my case,” he proclaimed in one tweet. Of course, that view completely disregards Harry’s ability to make his own decisions as an adult, but Meghan haters will continue to make their case.
He doubled down on the argument in a column for the Daily Mail, where he demanded that Harry and Meghan be stripped of their titles. Then Piers continued his tirade this morning, tweeting, “The taxpayer should not be paying a single penny to support Meghan & Harry’s new life as duty-free celebrities. Not. One. Penny.”
As many have pointed out, Piers’ argument disregards the trauma Harry has experienced growing up in the royal family, particularly where the loss of his mother is concerned. As Piers detractors also pointed out, his passion for royal title removal was not as palpable when the royal family was dealing with the fallout from Prince Andrew’s alleged connection to Jeffrey Epstein just weeks ago. Indeed, it seems Piers is taking the news about Harry and Meghan harder than the Queen herself.
