Origin

On July 11th, 2020, Twitter user @shirokumaroko tweeted the video. The post received more than 8 million views, 8,400 likes and 4,100 retweets in less than five days (shown below).

Precursor

There have been other examples of “Nunchuck Bear” online prior to the video. For example, on June 13th, 2011, YouTuber Anna Ranosos published a video of a person in a bear mask using nunchaku (shown below, left). On April 3rd, 2020, YouTuber Phantom Thief Irwin shared a video entitled “The Bears Are Learning How To Use Nunchucks.” The post received more than 9,100 views in less than six months (shown below, right).

Spread

That day, @shirokumaroko tweeted a follow-up video. The post received more than 2,900 views and 140 likes in less than one week (shown below).

The following day, Twitter user @KevinRBrackett shared the video with the caption, “We were all worried about Skynet. Meanwhile, nunchuck bears.” The post received more than 93,000 likes and 33,000 retweets in less than one three days (shown below).

That day, Redditor OliveOcelot shared the video on the /r/NatureIsFuckingLit. The post received more than 2,500 points (97% upvoted) and 90 comments in less than 24 hours.
