Nintendo surprised audiences yesterday when it surprise-dropped Kirby Fighters 2, a fighting game whose central premise struck many gamers as, “What if Smash, but all Kirby?”

Smash veterans will recognize a lot of the concepts present in Kirby Fighters 2 (which is itself a sequel to the 2014 DS game Kirby Fighters Deluxe). The game features a roster of 17 Kirbies with different abilities, which immediately calls to mind Kirby’s “copy” ability in the Smash series. The game also features Smash fighters Meta Knight and King Dedede, as well as Kirby-universe staples Waddle-dee, Gooey and Magalor. There are items and stage hazards as well.

In terms of differences from the Smash series, there appear to be relatively few. The game uses an HP system, meaning rather than forcing opponents to lose “stocks” as is traditional in competitive Smash, a player wins by depleting their opponents’ health bar, and each Kirby has a full move-set based on their ability, as opposed to just a neutral-special attack.

While the Kirby-based fighter seems like a Smash rehash, it’s not altogether surprising. Kirby Fighters 2 is developed by HAL Laboratory, who developed the early Smash games.

Gameplay clips spread on Twitter shortly after release, as players enjoyed the similarities and differences from the game’s obvious inspiration.

The game is cooly-priced at $19.99, which is pretty decent for a polished Smash-like.
