Carol Fenner was initially shocked when her daughter, Luna, was born with a distinctive dark-colored birthmark across her eyes and face. Her 4D ultrasound scans never showed the mark, so it came as a surprise to everyone inside the delivery room.
After the nurses whisked Luna off, Carol scrambled for answers. She wondered if the mark signified measles — but doctors told her and her partner that it could signify cancer; it was so rare the doctors were sure what to do.
Luna’s birthmark is referred to as a giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN) and is the result of genetic changes while the baby is in the womb. Hers will likely grow proportionally as she gets older. But thankfully, MRI scans revealed it was not cancerous.
In the effort to raise awareness about birthmarks, Carol and her family set up an Instagram page and posted photos of Luna in her day-to-day life. Tens of thousands of followers have dubbed Luna a “little butterfly” and liken her mark to Batman’s mask.
But this adorable and unique baby girl has also faced terrible online trolling. And people in public often stare, point and make a scene. Strangers have asked Carol if her daughter is contagious, going so far as to call her “disgusting.” Who could be so cruel?!
Now, Carol is responding to those who have something negative to say about Luna.
