One mom is speaking out to warn others about an unexpected symptom after nearly losing her son to a rare form of cancer.

Carly Cooke of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, told Caters News Agency that her son was a happy and healthy toddler up until September 2017. At that point, she noticed that her little boy had a persistent “weeping eye.” Initially, she believed that it was simply due to conjunctivitis, which can be a symptom of the common cold — and doctors agreed with her assessment.

“Harri often had colds so at first I didn’t think much of his weeping eye,” she recalled. “The doctors agreed that it was likely to be a cold but as the weeks passed he was believed to have a blocked tear duct. It didn’t seem to bother him, he was so happy all of the time.”

Unfortunately, things then took a turn. Harri’s face suddenly began to swell up, and their general practitioner referred the family to an eye specialist. At that point, the tot’s medical team realized his watery eye was actually indicating something far more serious — a malignant cancerous mass behind his nose.

“Once we arrived six doctors turned up, and they all seemed really worried. The NHS did everything they could but we just didn’t realize how serious it was,” Carly said. “Harri’s bone structure around his eye had changed, indicating the malicious mass that lay behind. His type was so rare — we were in complete shock. You never think it’s going to be your child.”

In January, Harri was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer that required 30 proton beam therapy treatments only available in the United States as well as 14 rounds of chemotherapy. Thankfully, the little boy is now in remission, but his parents are still worried about how the aggressive treatment protocol will impact his life going forward. They’re also speaking out to warn other parents about the unexpected warning signs that indicated Harri’s cancer and to encourage people to donate to charities that focus on childhood cancers.

“It’s so rare and unexpected that it’s hard to know what to look for,” Carly said. “Blood supplies are currently depleted, and donors are needed for both blood and platelet transfusions. Charities like CLIC Sargent, a charity for children with cancer, are brilliant for helping families and informing them.”
