Heather Carmichael was immediately concerned when she noticed her 9-year-old daughter, Leah, bringing weights and a scale into her bedroom.

The worried mom asked Leah, a fourth-grader from Kansas, what she was doing with the workout-related items.

That’s when Leah admitted what had been going on with her peers. Other kids were making fun of her appearance and weight and calling her “fat.”

Leah was feeling so hurt and insecure that she felt pressure to lose weight. “It made me feel like I wasn’t good enough,” Leah told WDAF Kansas City.

Heather was so upset about her daughter’s ordeal. In the effort to reroute her daughter’s mindset, she brought home a T-shirt for Leah featuring an empowering message about kindness printed on the front.

“Bought this shirt for my youngest daughter, who is one of the kindest, most generous people I know,” Heather wrote on Facebook. “We just had to have a talk because quite a few kids have called her fat lately (she’s going through a growth spurt) and it’s breaking my heart. She is strong and healthy and beautiful. In our house, we talk about heathy, not fat vs. skinny. So here’s my PSA to please teach your kids to use kind words and stop defining women by their weight.”

Thanks to Heather’s Facebook post and Leah’s proactive approach to spreading the message on her new T-shirt, the mom-daughter duo sparked a movement for hundreds of other mothers and daughters throughout their community.
