For 32-year-old Kelly McKissack, being a mother giving birth naturally had always been a dream… though for many years, it seemed like an impossibility.
The Texas mom was diagnosed with Methyl Tetrahydrofolate Reductase Mutation and Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that causes blood clotting.
The road to pregnancy was not easy for Kelly and her husband, who endured three devastating miscarriages before turning to the idea of surrogacy.
And the person Kelly chose to carry her and her husband Aaron’s biological child? Kelly’s own mother, Tracey Thompson.
McKissack’s first daughter, Kelcey, was born on January 6, 2016, through surrogacy by McKissack’s mother, Tracey Thompson.
Tracey was honored to be the person to help Kelly become a mother in her own right.
After a rather grueling pregnancy and 38-hour labor, the then 54-year-old Tracey gave birth to her own granddaughter in January 2016. Their story went viral, touching hearts across the country.
Kelly and Aaron had a handful of embryos left over and thought about trying for a second baby — though they knew this time, Tracey’s days of surrogacy were over.
Now, four years after her first child was birthed by her own mother, Kelly has experienced the miracle of which she’s always dreamt.
