Designer and former actress Mary-Kate Olsen has filed an emergency request to divorce her husband of five years, Olivier Sarkozy. She reportedly filed a petition for divorce in mid-April, but New York City courts are backlogged due to the on-going virus situation. However, courts are accepted emergency petitions, which is why Mary-Kate has updated her filing.
Mary-Kate has reportedly been told by her husband’s legal team that she needs to leave their shared apartment by May 18. However New York City is currently still under stay-at-home orders, and Mary-Kate has requested that Olivier extend the deadline to May 30. Her team has also claimed that Olivier hasn’t replied, and Mary-Kate believes that Olivier terminated the lease on their apartment without letting her know ahead of time.
If accepted, the emergency filing will help Mary-Kate protect her right to stay in her home as the declaration will “trigger an automatic court order preventing him from disposing of her property.”
Mary-Kate and Olivier were married in a quiet ceremony at their home in 2015 after dating for three years. Several people had strong opinions about their 16 year age difference, but they appeared unbothered. Mary-Kate had previously commented that “Everyone has an opinion. I find it’s better to focus on what’s in front of you and to keep putting one foot in front of the other.”
