For years, there have been rumors of a feud between Madonna and Lady Gaga. The pop stars have taken some subtle (and not-so-subtle) jabs at one another.

Now, Madonna is attempting to squash the feud speculation for good. She opened up about the subject in a new interview with British Vogue.

“People got very excited about [the thought of Lady Gaga and myself as] enemies, when we never were enemies,” she lamented.

Instead, Madonna blames the rumors on society’s tendency to pit successful women against each other.

It all started in 2011, when Lady Gaga released “Born This Way.” The song reminded many people of Madonna’s “Express Yourself,” and Madonna went so far as to call Gaga’s song “reductive.”

Later, she confirmed that the song was her only issue with Gaga.

“The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs,” Madonna told Rolling Stone in 2015, per E! News. “It was just that one issue.”

Gaga has addressed the topic multiple times over the years. She denied that she copied Madonna’s song, called Madonna out for making such a statement through the media, and added that she still admires the Queen of Pop no matter what.

“I admired her always. And I still admire her, no matter what she might think of me,” Gaga said in her 2017 Netflix documentary.

Earlier this year, Madonna and Gaga reunited at the 2019 Oscars and even posed for a TIME Magazine portrait, leading fans to declare the feud (if it ever really existed) “officially over.”
