Macaulay Culkin’s friendship with the late Michael Jackson may have raised a few eyebrows in its time, but the 38-year-old actor still has nothing but praise for the King of Pop.

Entertainment Tonight reports that the former child star appeared on a recent episode of fellow actor Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You. In the hour-long interview, Macaulay spoke about the beginning of his career and how his fast track to fame actually prompted Michael to initiate a friendship after Home Alone became a smash hit.

“He reached out to me because a lot of things were happening, big and fast with me and I think he identified with that,” the actor said. “At the end of the day, it’s almost easy to say it was weird or whatever, but it wasn’t, because it made sense. At the end of the day, we were friends.”

Macaulay also voiced his belief that people only thought it was strange because the singer “was the most famous person in the world” and that despite their age difference, Michael “was a peerless person.” He explained that none of the kids his age could possibly understand the impact his fame had on him, but Michael (who had skyrocketed to fame himself as a child member of The Jackson 5) could. He described Michael as a “hilarious,” “sweet,” and “funny” friend, speaking highly of the normality of their bond.

“For me, it’s so normal and mundane,” he explained. “I know it’s a big deal to everyone else, but to me, it was a normal friendship.”

Macaulay is also the godfather of all three of the pop star’s children, including his only daughter, Paris Jackson.
