Months after her rep confirmed their split, Lady Gaga addressed her breakup publicly for the first time.
During a Las Vegas performance on Sunday as apart of her Enigma residency, the pop star referenced her broken engagement.
“So, last time I sang this song, I had a ring on my finger,” Gaga said, per People. “So tonight will be different.”
Footage shared by a fan on Twitter appears to show the singer showing off her ringless finger to the crowd while crossing the stage.
The 33-year-old Oscar winner was referencing the engagement ring she wore during her engagement to talent agent Christian Carino. The two confirmed they were dating back in February 2017. Though they didn’t make a formal announcement, rumors that the two were engaged began to swirl in 2018, and Gaga ultimately revealed that the two were indeed engaged when she thanked “my fiancé Christian” during her speech at Elle‘s 25th Annual Women in Hollywood Celebration in October.
Speculation that the two had split began in early February 2019, after the singer was spotted without her ring at the Grammy Awards and didn’t thank Christian in her acceptance speech at that ceremony. Gaga’s rep confirmed the breakup later that month.
“It just didn’t work out. Relationships sometimes end,” a source told People of the split that had apparently occurred “a bit ago.” “There’s no long dramatic story.”
Naturally, that hasn’t stopped people from trying to figure out the reason behind the breakup. A separate source told Us Weekly in April that Gaga “was devastated at first” but realized leading up to the split that the talent agent’s personality “infringed on her creative process.”
“[She] couldn’t risk jeopardizing her career in that way, over a man, and that’s not something she would stand for,” the insider said.
And of course, there are still people who are convinced that the breakup is all thanks to Gaga’s secret (and totally speculative) love affair with her A Star Is Born costar, Bradley Cooper.
