Kanye's $1 Million "Gift" to Kim for Not Posting on Instagram Is Weird

We live in a day and age where social media influencers are getting paid tons of money to put things on their Instagrams and YouTube accounts and Facebook pages and Twitter. And when I mean tons of money, I mean tons of money.

The accounts of celebrities like Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and just about anyone with a substantial following can net them hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars for a few posts.

In fact, it was revealed that Selena Gomez, who’s got the most followers on Instagram in the whole wide world, got paid around $550,000 per social media post, which is a number that has a lot of people going “WHAT” online.

Now, $550,000 per picture is an obscene amount of money and companies are obviously more than willing to pay for it because they see the value in forking over that much cash to celebrities, athletes, influencers and whoever has a responsive Instagram audience.

Whether or not it’s “ridiculous” for stars to get paid this much for “simple” Instagram posts online is something we’ll get to later, but we’ve got other things to talk about: like this little story involving Kim Kardashian getting $1 million for her husband Kanye West.

image

Since Kim is one of the most followed accounts on Instagram, she apparently has an audience who avidly buys the products she posts to her page. At least that’s what I’m assuming because her combination of followers, fame, and social standing was worth $1 million for a single post.

When Model Ashley Graham invited Kim to join her Pretty Big Deal podcast, and Kim came on the show as a guest, the two of them got into a lot of the particulars of Kim’s personal life. It was chock full of informational kernels about the lifestyles of the rich and famous that most of us will be happy enough to whiff for a few seconds.

image

The most interesting bit in their interview, apparently, is when Kim mentioned that she was once offered $1 million by a fashion designer to post a photo of her wearing one of their designs on her Instagram page.

I know, it’s a hard number and figure to swallow. You probably uploaded a photo of yourself doing a yoga pose on a beach looking very enlightened and fit, or some eggs that you cooked for breakfast that you’re very proud of — and not only did you not get paid for it, you also lost 2 followers. I’m sorry.

image

And just when you thought this story couldn’t make you feel any worse about your current financial situation, it will. Kim, who didn’t name the company in her interview, didn’t take them up on their offer. I know. She was offered a cool mill to post a picture and she was just like, “Nah, I don’t need that noise.”

image

The reason? The unnamed fashion designer has made a killing off of copying Yeezy, which, for any troglodytes out there who are deficient when it comes to understanding the ins and outs of the modern fashion industry, belongs to her husband, rapper Kanye West.

image

Before turning down the million-dollar offer, Kim considered it and decided to go to Kanye and ask him what he thought about it. Kanye said that he didn’t want Kim to take the huge paycheck and essentially help out a competitor. That’s when Kim decided to tell the company to scram.

Which, honestly, seems like the smart move. I mean an endorsement from Kim, in a way, is legitimizing the company that’s biting off of all her husband’s designs. Why would you want to give those kinds of peeps publicity?

image

So Kim walked away from a ton of money because the decision didn’t sit right with her husband. On the one hand, if she knew the company ripped off Yeezy designs, then why would she entertain the offer, no matter the sum of the reward?!

And as you’re sitting at home sitting on your throne of self-righteousness, chomping on your Triscuits of sanctimony, I propound that you are gravely out of line. Because let’s all be honest here: There haven’t been many of us who’ve had the opportunity to earn a million bucks in one blow, let alone to turn it down.

image

All of this transpired a week before Mother’s Day, so when the ceremonial arrangement of flowers appeared at Kim’s doorstep congratulating her on being a contributing member of furthering the human race, Kim was surprised to find that an envelope was delivered to her door as well.

She told Ashley Graham,

“I open the envelope and it was a million dollar check, and there was a note saying ‘Thank you for always supporting me and not posting.”http://undefined/”

It was obviously from Yeezy, thankful that she sided with him and turned down the offer. In addition to the million bucks, he also offered Kim a contract that gave her a percentage of ownership of his clothing line.

Mama Jenner, the matriarch of the Kardashian clan, incredulously asked Kim if she honestly was going to cash her own husband’s check. To which Kim replied:

“I was like, ‘You better believe I’m gonna cash this. Yes, I have no shame, I’m cashing this check.”http://undefined/”

Kim, admitted that she wasn’t so sure about taking Ye’s money at first and even told her boo that she couldn’t accept the sum.

Two days later, she cashed the check.

This story leaves me with some questions, exorbitant-amounts-of-money-for-influencer-posts aside. The first being, well, they’re married, so it’s kind of weird that they don’t have a joint bank account, right?

Well, seeing how inclined Kanye is to spending lots of money on passion projects and Kim and her entire clan are masters of business and earning tons and tons of dollah dollah bills on a daily basis, it kind of makes sense that she wouldn’t want to wrap her wealth up with his.

image

I mean, of course she isn’t going to let her own husband starve or get into ridiculous amounts of debt, but by keeping their incomes separate, she can at least control how much money she doles out to him if he ever finds himself struggling financially.

The other thing is that I took Kanye’s offer of a million bucks symbolically, while it’s a super generous and nice offer. If you’re married to someone who gives you ownership of a very profitable clothing company, which is already weird because again, they’re married, you would think that’d be enough, right?

image

Not to mention the fact that she could’ve put up one or maybe two posts maximum on her IG account and made that money back in no time. They would probably send photographers to her home, do her hair and makeup for her and be in and out in 30 minutes, and she’d still earn $500k for a half hour of her time.

OK, I’m going to just stop talking about this and try to channel this energy into something positive, because I feel myself becoming a total hater right now. Which is lame. God bless Kim and Kanye on their not-joint bank accounts and gifts of a million bucks to each other. If I was earning that kind of payola, maybe I’d look at this whole thing differently.
