Is Disney Really Going to Reset the ‘Star Wars’ Canon? No, of Course Not

When it comes to passionate fan bases, the fans of Star Wars certainly top the list. Sometimes, that passion reveals itself in support for the franchise, and the directors and actors who make the films possible. Other times, people use their passionate “fandom” to tear the franchise apart and complain about it on the internet, treating those same directors and actors very poorly. There’s no denying that there’s a huge toxicity problem among Star Wars fans, but so far, Disney hasn’t done much to address that.

Is Disney going to reset the ‘Star Wars’ canon?

The rumors of a Star Wars reset first started making the rounds on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 after a video was posted to the Doomcock Overlord DVD YouTube channel. In the video, which is entitled “Star Wars Leaks Reveal Exactly How the Sequel Trilogy Will Be ERASED,” the narrator appears to say that, due to a “civil war” of sorts going on a Lucasfilm, some of the Star Wars canon will be erased — specifically, the last three films of the Skywalker Saga.

The video’s narrator claims that the erasure will be made possible using a concept from Star Wars Rebels. “In the Season 4 Episode 13 installment titled ‘A World Between Worlds,’ the concept of the Veil of The Force was introduced, a mystical dimension of The Force that connects all time and space,” the narrator explains.

“I have received confirmation from two additional sources claiming that this is spot on — that indeed Lucasfilm realizes they have a massive problem on their hands, that the Star Wars franchise is all but dead, and despite Kathleen Kennedy’s hatred of this idea, Lucasfilm is preparing to render the Sequel Trilogy null and void.”

Essentially, the narrator of the video says that The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker will be relegated to a separate universe that is not actually tied to the George Lucas films. Effectively, the plan — or the rumored plan, anyway — is to create a Star Wars “multiverse,” kind of like they did by establishing Star Wars Legends with the EU stuff before the new trilogy came out.

As compelling as some may find the video to be, this rumor seems too outlandish to be true. It’s impossible to see a move like this as anything but political, and it’d be a major slap in the face to those of us who actually like the new trilogy and can’t stand the toxic people who make the fandom largely unbearable (not to mention to the people like Rian Johnson and Kelly Marie Tran, who have been treated deplorably online).

So yeah, the big reset isn’t actually happening. Also, a quick note on Doomcock Overlord DVD: Some outlets have reported that that same YouTube channel has shared Star Wars-based rumors in the past that turned out to be true, namely that Palpatine would return in The Rise of Skywalker (which he did). In reality, the Doomcock Overlord DVD got that info from other leaks. With that in mind, there’s no real reason to believe them about this rumor, either.
