I Don’t Want to Play with You Anymore refers to a nightmare sequence from 1999 Pixar film Toy Story 2. In 2018, the screen capture from the scene gained popularity as an image macro, often used to illustrate mass-abandonment of various video games.
Origin
On November 24th, 1999, Pixar animated film Toy Story 2 premiered across the United States. Early in the film, cowboy Woody has a nightmare about being thrown away by its owner Andy.
Spread
The macro based on the scene originally gained popularity in Spanish meme groups on Facebook in mid-2017. On May 29th, 2017, Facebook group Ludmila Memes posted the earliest known meme featuring the macro (shown below, top right). The macro saw continuous usage in Spanish meme groups through 2017 and 2018, with notable examples appearing in Cosas De Crush, Momos sad and Twice Memes groups.
On March 9th, 2018, Twitter user @Phoenix44123 posted the first known English version of the meme, replacing Woody with an image of Nintendo 3DS console (shown below, left). In the same Twitter thread, user @JuansMeatyTacos posted another edit of the macro (shown below, right).
The image gained widespread popularity in December 2018. On December 3rd, 2018, Twitter user @Jeetdoh posted an edit of the meme which received over 100 retweets within a month. On December 5th, 2018, Redditor GodzillaWolverinefan posted another edit of the macro to /r/spyro subreddit. The image garnered over 380 upvotes in a month.
Later in December 2018, popular posts using the macro appeared in various gaming subreddits, as well as in /r/dankmemes.
