New Orleans is currently experiencing the highest growth in coronavirus cases seen anywhere in the world; as of Thursday afternoon, 997 infections had been reported, including 46 deaths.
The number of cases jumped by 510 in a single day on Thursday, up 28 per cent from the night before, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.
Hoda Kotb was recently interviewing Drew Brees on a live “Today” show broadcast. Drew, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, donated $5 million to victims of the coronavirus in Louisiana.
The seasoned anchor has a deep-rooted connection to the city of New Orleans and was so touched by the NFL star’s selfless act. Back in the 90s, Hoda spent years living and working for a CBS affiliate in New Orleans.
After thanking Drew for his kindness, the ‘Today’ anchor and mother-of-two was so overcome with emotion that she broke down in tears just seconds after the interview ended.
She then apologized to the camera and viewers at home; she simply couldn’t get the words out or finish her broadcast.
While Hoda repeatedly apologized, co-anchor Savannah Guthrie took over the segment from her home studio. “Hoda, I’m so sorry hun,” she said. “I know where your heart is, I do.”
