In a frankly incredible commitment to the bit, the late Herman Cain, who passed last month after a month battling COVID-19, tweeted from beyond the grave to tell his followers that COVID-19 might not be that lethal.

Over the weekend, the CDC published a study which suggested that of the hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 deaths in the United States, many also came in tandem with underlying causes. Only 6% of the deaths, or just over 9,000 people, were due solely from COVID.

To those who believe the coronavirus is built up to be much worse than it really is, this seemed like great news, but to be clear, the “underlying causes” in the study included things like hypertension, obesity and other run-of-the-mill medical issues that were listed as factors contributing to death. Furthermore, virologists pointed out that COVID-19 can greatly exacerbate other conditions due to the assault the disease puts on the lungs. Dr. Ryan McNamara tweeted that those interpreting the number to mean “only 6% of supposed COVID deaths are from COVID” were operating in bad faith.

Nevertheless, the story spread around conservative Twitter as a sort of “gotcha” to science, and Herman Cain, who died from COVID-19 (and had also battled cancer in his life), tweeted “It looks like the virus is not as deadly as the mainstream media first made it out to be.”

Naturally, many found it ironic that a man who had died from COVID-19 was assuring his followers that COVID-19 was not that deadly. To be clear, Cain was not actually tweeting. but rather it was “The Cain Gang,” a group of family and staff that is now running Cain’s Twitter account, led his daughter, Dr. Melanie Cain Gallo.

Truly, it takes the work of a diehard poster (or some irresponsible social media managers) to be this committed to the bit.
