Back Yard Burgers in Independence, Missouri, is a popular destination for first responders. Not only are the burgers tasty, but the establishment always makes sure to show firefighters, police officers, and first responders just how much they’re respected and valued.

After 9/11, the Back Yard Burgers staff dedicated an entire wall in the entrance to the firefighters in its community. The restaurant also offers half-priced meals to police officers and first responders.

In between fire calls on September 11, 2019, fire engine operator Thaddeus Marr and his fellow crew members walked into Back Yard Burgers to grab some lunch.

They had no clue about the wonderful surprise in store.

Earlier that day, manager Jeff Pepperman received a very important set of instructions from an anonymous customer.

The unnamed man was on a mission to feed every first responder who entered the restaurant that day, in honor of their bravery and sacrifices on 9/11. He was so determined to see his plan come to fruition that he had to rearrange his finances to make it happen.

Jeff agreed to the request, then watched the donor reach into his pocket.

He then handed Jeff the wad of cash he’d set aside to cover the meals — with a specific dollar amount that brought Jeff to tears.
