  • Hamilton is coming! As the Daily Dot reported in May, the full-length film version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway show will be streamable on July 3, more than a year earlier than originally planned.
  • Other highlights on the July calendar for Disney Plus: The long-awaited arrival of Solo to the Star Wars collection, a Beyonce visual album with tie-ins to the Lion King, and a new Disney+ Originals show, Muppets Now.
  • Disney+ delivers entertainment from the Marvel universe and the Star Wars series, as well as its Disney and Pixar foundation, plus National Geographic movies and shows, for just $6.99 a month. There’s also a bundle deal with Hulu and ESPN+ that starts at $12.99 a month.

Hamilton

Hamilton, for the uninitiated, is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s American-history-meets-hip-hop tour de force Broadway show that debuted in 2015 and has been beloved ever since. Save for a few f-bombs that had to be sacrificed to keep a PG-13 rating, the movie version debuting July 3 fully captures an original Broadway production show from July 2016, with Miranda himself in the title role. Fans who want the next best thing to being in the room where it happened are going to be thrilled. (And there’s also a documentary with nine original cast members that will debut on Friday as well from the folks behind The Undefeated, also premiering July 3.)

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Licensing issues initially kept this 2018 offering from Star Wars completists subscribed to Disney Plus. It’s lived on Netflix for a while, but that changes July 10 when the prequel joins Disney Plus’s Star Wars collection. In Solo, the cavalier Han Solo gets an origin story of sorts, with Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian also prominent in the narrative. Longtime team member Lawrence Kasdan teamed with his son Jonathan to write this movie, adding heist movie elements to the Star Wars formula fans are used to seeing.

Pixar In Real Life

This innovative show, featuring the talents of Improv Everywhere, takes iconic scenes from Pixar movies and recreates them (or, at least, draws inspiration from them) in and around New York City. This month’s installment draws from Up, with an Improv Everywhere cast member enlisting New Yorkers to watch his balloon cart. Surprises ensue.

Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!

Ciro Nieli, part of the Teen Titans team, is the creative force behind this anime-inspired cartoon series. Five cyborg monkeys and a boy named Chiro, living on a fictional planet called Shuggazoom, do the episode-by-episode battle with evil you’d expect. However, there are some interesting wrinkles to the story; you’ll be able to dig into seasons 1 and 2 starting July 17.

Black Is King

A new Beyonce visual album’s landing by the end of July, and it’s on Disney Plus for a reason. Namely, it draws from The Lion King: The Gift, which Beyonce worked on last year. But from the looks of it, it’s a big, ambitious, visually rich project that meets the moment. As the press statement from Disney and Beyonce’s Parkwood Entertainment, it speaks to “today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns” in particular.

Muppets Now

This new series from the Muppets Studio is its first original for Disney+ as well as its first unscripted series. It’s six episodes long and it features a rather meta plotline: Scooter rushes to make his delivery deadlines and upload the brand-new Muppet series for streaming. It includes plenty of characters and bits from the beloved show, including Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker’s verging-on-slapstick experiments and lifestyle tips from Miss Piggy.
