The issue of representation is a major ongoing conversation in the world of creative arts. Oftentimes, we see Hollywood’s biggest stars transforming themselves across race and gender lines for roles that will win them acclaim and praise. Today, the public is asking that those roles be given to actual members of those communities.
Halle Berry found herself centered in this discussion over the weekend. The actress mentioned an upcoming role during an Instagram Live appearance. She explained that her character was a transgender man. As she continued explaining the character, Halle misgendered the character by using incorrect pronouns.
Many in the transgender community spoke out against her casting in the role. They believed the interview indicated that she had not sufficiently educated herself for the role. In addition, they felt it would make more sense to have a transgender man play a transgender man. Some called that those responsible for casting the film fill the role with an own voices actor.
