Janet Fein, 84, has lived a very full life. She got married at 19, had five children, and now has eight grandchildren. She earned an associate degree from Richland College as a young woman and worked at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children for 20 years.
But just because she’s done a lot already doesn’t mean she’s finished. After retiring at age 77, Janet decided she still had more she wanted to do.
She enrolled at University of Texas at Dallas and began working toward her Bachelor of Arts in sociology. “I figured why not,” she told CBS Dallas Fort Worth.
Although Janet was determined to finish her degree, it wasn’t always easy. Janet travels everywhere with a walker and an oxygen tank, so she always had to sit in the front row of her classes.
Eventually, Janet decided to switch to online classes so she could work from the comfort of her assisted living home. Even then, it wasn’t easy. Janet typed all her papers with one hand — the longest one was 15 pages!
Despite all the challenges, Janet successfully finished all the courses to get her bachelor’s degree. And on Wednesday, December 19, she’ll make her way across the stage (in a wheelchair) to receive her diploma.
Janet’s family will be in the crowd, cheering her on. Janet is such an inspiration — she’s an amazing reminder that no matter your age, you can achieve anything!
