Get Stick Bugged Lol, also known as Get Stick Bug Lol, refers to a series of bait-and-switch videos involving a swaying green stick bug. Typically, these clips begin with an unrelated subject that then rapidly changes, revealing the dancing bug set to different music. The meme exploded in popularity in late July 2020, particularly on YouTube.
Origin
On May 30th, 2018, YouTube user EliteTeamKiller uploaded the earliest known video of the stick bug swaying from side to side, set to the song “Some Cut” by hip-hop group Trillville. The video (seen below) gained over 760,000 views and 66,000 likes over two years. The bug’s swaying in this clip is a camouflage technique used by stick bugs to imitate twigs or leaves in the breeze.
The first known instance of the “Get Stick Bugged Lol” caption was uploaded on July 24th, 2020, by YouTuber Stack Man (shown below, left). However, earlier examples dating to at least July 22nd appear on Discord. The meme may have originated from the Roblox community, as it uses the “Stick Bug” theme from the 2018 Roblox mod and game mode Bee Swarm Simulator (shown below, right).

On August 2nd, 2020, Instagram user lordpooskin posted another example to their account using the EA logo as a bait-and-switch (seen below), receiving over 10,000 likes in less than 24 hours. The clip was also reposted to iFunny by user weebs later that day, where it received over 3,400 likes and 83 comments.
On July 25th, YouTuber The Last Mimiga uploaded another variant using a scene from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (shown below, left), receiving over 5,500 views and 440 likes. On July 28th, YouTuber beanfruit uploaded an example that opened with a clip from Minecraft (shown below, right), receiving over 3,700 views and 170 likes.
