US Navy Captain Edwin Smith has experienced some unforgettable homecomings, but his last one has been the best so far.

For the 14 months, Smith was deployed in the Middle East — and by the end of his deployment, COVID-19 was spreading its way across the world.

Meanwhile, Smith’s wife and seven kids were back home in Tampa, already worried and missing him.

Upon his return home, Smith had to be quarantined on a naval base in Virginia in accordance with travel restrictions. Before he could return to his family, he needed to be cleared by medical professionals.

With a clean bill of health, Smith finally flew back into Tampa. He assumed his homecoming would be pretty anti-climactic with all the social distancing going on.

But what he didn’t know was that his wife, Brittany, had planned something very special for him, alongside their seven children.

“I’ve experienced those kinds of embraces in the past, but it’s definitely very different,” he told CBS Local. “I almost felt like an inmate having that level of isolation.”
