Imagine sitting down to do your business on the toilet, then feeling two fangs digging into your butt cheek. It sounds like a scene from a horror movie, so we hate to tell you this, but snakes hiding in toilets are becoming more and more common!

The story making headlines lately comes from North Carolina’s Mike Green, who says he’s pulled six snakes out of his toilet in the past four years. But that’s far from the only dramatic example; for all you country music fans out there, singer Brett Eldredge walked into his vacation bathroom in the Bahamas to find a snake chilling in the toilet bowl. There are even stories of massive pythons being pulled out of toilets in Australia.

So why is this happening? The curator of reptiles at the Los Angeles Zoo — who’s also a former plumber — has the answer: “They’re sleek animals that can fit into tight spaces in their environment, and they feel more comfortable in tight, dark spaces. So they’ll go into a pipe and feel very good about it. And then navigate through the sewer system, in some cases, and then find their way up into somebody’s toilet.”

If this ever happens to you, the curator advises that you not try to be a hero. Just call animal control, the professionals who know how to handle a situation like this.
