Just three days before she was born, Cary Velazquez was diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Often referred to as “brittle bone disease,” this defective gene decreases collagen production inside the body, leaving bones incredibly prone to breaks and fractures.
Cary’s bones are so fragile that they can “break in the wind.” Because of how delicate they are, doctors have likened them to glass.
Though she must use a wheelchair to get around and struggles with limb deformities, Cary realized her one true passion in life. She always loved watching beauty tutorials on YouTube and was inspired to experiment with different makeup looks on herself.
As time passed, her mother and siblings realized she was actually a natural-born makeup artist.
Cary is now 29 years old. She has a great support system but is sadly no stranger to discrimination. “I still receive negative comments due to my appearance,” she told Barcroft TV. “I’m called ugly, I’m told my head is big or that I look like a clown; I have to prove them wrong every time.”
This truly inspiring woman has been professionally doing makeup for the past three years and, as you’re about to see, lives her life with as much independence and normality as possible.
