For 15 years, a man lovingly known as “Mr. James” has worked as the custodian at Hickerson Elementary School in Tennessee for 15 years.

Mr. James is deaf and sometimes it’s hard to understand him. But it doesn’t matter; the students have come to love him and his caring and cheerful personality. He’s often seen giving the kids high-fives and teaching them how to sign simple words and phrases in the hallway.

When kindergarten teachers Ms. Hershman and Ms. Hartsfield heard Mr. James was about to turn 60, they knew they wanted to gather their class and do something extra special for him.

In this clip, Mr. James walks into the kindergarten class to find the students had learned how to sing “Happy Birthday” in sign language. At first, he was confused and caught off-guard. But as he realized what was happening, he threw his arms up into the air and started shrieking.

Then came the tears… lots and lots of tears.

The teachers posted their video to the school’s Facebook page where it went viral with tens of thousands of shares. I can see why.
