Harriet and Virgil Whiteshirt were married for 45 happy years. The couple (62 and 66, respectively) from El Reno, Oklahoma, dedicated their entire lives to caring for their family.

Five of their grandkids lived with them in their own home. They always stepped up when their loved ones needed help.

But on August 21, 2020, Harriet and Virgil were admitted to an Oklahoma City hospital. They were both struggling to take a breath.

Harriet and Virgil were diagnosed with COVID-19, but everyone thought they’d get better. Including them.

They were in the same hospital but different rooms, constantly texting each other with motivational words. “We’re going to get through this,” they’d say.

And Harriet and Virgil constantly texted each other to say, “I love you.”

For only a handful of days, Harriet and Virgil were placed on ventilators.

But then the long and loving text thread they’d shared between them abruptly came to an end.
