Trump COVID Diagnosis Controversy
On October 3rd, 2020, Claudia posted a video saying that her mother was “coughing all around the house after Trump tested positive for covid.” The post received more than 753,000 likes and 2,100 comments in less than one week (shown below, left).
On October 5th, Twitter user @SailorZZtar tweeted a series of comments made by Conway on TikTok. In these comments, Conway claims that President Trump is doing badly, following his treatment for the coronavirus (shown below, right).
Some have criticized the reception to Conway’s TikTok videos. Mel Magazine published, “DON’T FORCE CLAUDIA CONWAY TO BE YOUR HERO.” In the article, they write:
Claudia, as she’s often said, finds herself in a traumatic, impossible situation. She’s a left-leaning teen in a GOP household — which, in itself, is nothing out of the ordinary. But unlike other kids using social media to praise Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and rip on the president, her voice carries as that of an insurgent deep behind enemy lines, since her mom and dad have come to prominently symbolize the current split in the conservative psyche: decided loyalty to a corrupt demagogue or a “principles over party” approach that begs for a return to Reaganite norms.
Claudia Conway now has the duty of convincing people to vote against Trump when she’s not old enough to punch a ballot herself. Like the previous savior-teens, she is asking if the grown-ups — her parents obviously included — can exercise their current power to address the crisis of the moment, not just fight inane culture wars. If George and Kellyanne stand for anything, it is politics as theater, or a game of appearances. To paint Claudia as an avenging champion of liberalism feeds into that mindset. It makes her less a hero than a pawn.
Many online regard her TikTok videos as a source of insider information into the Trump White House. This perception reached a new height during the coronavirus videos. On October 6th, 2020, Twitter user @mattwest929 tweeted, “I can’t take it 🤣🤣 Claudia Conway is the supreme whistleblower of our time.” The video received more than 2 million views, 8,600 likes and 1,500 retweets in less than two days (shown below).

That day, Conway posted a written statement on TikTok. It says, “It has come to my attention that my recent TikToks and comments have sparked intense controversy and uproar. Tis was not my intent. I am appaled at the mainstreatm media’s efforts to exploit a teenage girl, which is negatively affecting my mental health. I am not the ‘whistleblower’ of our time. I am simply a fifteen year-old with a following and bad luck when it comes to media coverage.” The post received more than 771,000 views, 45,000 reactions and 2,200 comments (shown below).
