When you think of Tasmanian devils, you probably think of Taz from Warner Bros. For many, the cartoon version was all they knew. Some people may even assume that Tasmanian devils, in general, are a work of fiction. But much like the narwhal and reindeer, they’re quite real.

That said, there’s a reason why they haven’t been seen out in the wild quite as often these days. The devils, which pose no real concern for humans, haven’t been out in the wild in mainland Australia for 3,000 years. Why did they leave? As the BBC reports, dingoes had something to do with it.

That said, it should come as no surprise that the animals are now endangered. To keep them thriving, conservation group Aussie Ark has been reintroducing them to the wild with some safety features built-in — like, a fence to keep predators away. Their breeding season is in February, so they’re hoping that the devils will be happy and well enough to have offspring.

Helping the efforts is none other than actor Chris Hemsworth. Chris, along with his wife Elsa Pataky, were front and center in the efforts to bring the Tasmanian devils back. Chris is a noted animal lover, especially animals found in the wild. With his efforts, he’s also helping bring more awareness towards the Tasmanian devil. Hopefully, in the future, their population will increase with these extra efforts.
