The world briefly stood still as news of the death of Kobe Bryant emerged. The 41-year-old NBA superstar was killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, Sunday morning. Kobe and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were two of the nine people lost in the tragic accident.

The news came during what was otherwise a busy Sunday in America. The Pro Bowl began just as the news went public, with NFL players reacting on live TV. There were NBA games that also began as the news went out to the world. Across the league that was changed by Kobe’s talents, there were visceral reactions as the games went on in Kobe’s honor.

In downtown Los Angeles, at the Lakers’ own Staples Center, stars were gathering for the Grammy Awards and struggled to push through the evening. Artists such as Lizzo, Lil Nas X, DJ Khaled, and John Legend honored Kobe in their performances. Chrissy Teigen best summarized the feelings of the evening with her own tweets on the subject. “I cannot believe this is real. My god. Oh my god,” she wrote. “Downtown right now and nothing feels more unimportant than what we are doing today. This is absolutely terrible. Everyone is numb.”

Other celebrities took to social media to pay their respects to those lost in the accident. Everyone remembered Kobe for his achievements both on and off the court, of course. Many celebrities chose to note how tragic the situation is for the Bryant family, namely Kobe’s wife, Vanessa, and their three surviving daughters.

My heart is so heavy,” wrote Kim Kardashian. “No one should ever experience what the families involved are going through. This has affected us all so much but I cannot begin to imagine what Vanessa is feeling losing her husband and her baby girl. I cry just thinking about it. I am praying for the Bryant family, the Altobelli family and the families of all who perished in this unthinkable tragedy. Rest In Peace Legend.”

Jennifer Lopez also sent her love to Vanessa as she and Alex Rodriguez recalled memories of their friend. “We are all feeling sadness from this loss, but all I can think of is that it is a grain of sand compared to what Vanessa must going through right now,” she wrote. “I am sending all of my love and praying for you, your children and the other families involved in today’s tragic turn of events. The most unfair thing in life is to lose a child and husband on the same day. Vanessa, I pray for your strength and that God guides you each step of the way through this unimaginable heartbreak. To the other families who are suffering from this unthinkable tragedy, may God be with you all.”
