It’s hard to believe that Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship has been on our radar for nearly two decades.

Robert Lacey takes a step back to reexamine the Cambridges’ love story in Battle of Brothers. Excerpts of the book that have been serialized by the Daily Mail have looked into both William’s and Harry’s pasts. In doing so, the royal biographer reminds us of how Kate came into William’s orbit.

Kate reportedly decided upon a dogged pursuit of the prince in 2000. Although it’s unclear whether or not they’d met at that point, Kate decided to change her university plans and follow William to St. Andrews. She found her opportunity to make friends with him there, and the rest is history.

Well, almost. That history’s a little bumpier than most remember. There were allegedly a number of William and Kate breakups over the years. Kate, in her determination to be with William for the long haul, is said to have strategically worked her way through those times. It would take a decade from their start at St. Andrews to the altar, but Kate made it happen.
