Two months ago, Alex Trebek made a heartbreaking announcement to the world. The Jeopardy host has stage four pancreatic cancer.

“With the love and support of my family and friends, and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low-survival-rate statistics for this disease,” Alex said in a video message on March 6.

Recently, Alex won the Daytime Emmy Award for the best game show host. This isn’t Alex’s first Emmy — not by a long shot! But this year’s award is especially meaningful, given his recent announcement.

“The reception I got from the audience was extremely special, very touching,” Alex said backstage, per People. “We all know what’s going on in my life and I alluded to that in my remarks and I’ve been very blessed to discover how many people our show has influenced in their lives.”

Alex has won five Emmys previously, all of them for his work as a game show host. In 2011, he was also one of the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Alex has hosted Jeopardy since 1984. At the Emmy Awards, he spoke about how important the show is in American culture.

Jeopardy! has become a special institution in Americana,” he said. “And it has been a force for good, a force for knowledge, a force for the best kind of reality television if you think about it. Anybody can succeed, anybody can win a lot of money. Just ask James Holzhauer.”
