Alex Trebek has encountered a set back in his recovery from stage 4 pancreatic cancer. The Jeopardy! host sat down for an interview with Good Morning America where he revealed that his doctors have decided it’s best for him to undergo another round of chemotherapy.
Alex explained how doctors came to the decision. “I was doing so well. And my numbers went down to the equivalent of a normal human being who does not have pancreatic cancer. So we were all very optimistic. And they said, ‘Good, we’re gonna stop chemo, we’ll start you on immunotherapy,’” the 79-year-old explained.
“I lost about 12 pounds in a week. And my numbers went sky high, much higher than they were when I was first diagnosed,” he continued. “So, the doctors have decided that I have to undergo chemo again and that’s what I’m doing.”
The news comes just one month after Alex appeared in a video teaser for the latest season of Jeopardy! discussing how he was looking forward to getting back to work. Alex first shared news of his diagnosis in a video message in March.
Alex has been very open about how the battle with cancer and his treatment have impacted him. He’s been candid about struggling with depression while undergoing chemotherapy. “Cancer is mysterious in more ways than one,” the beloved host noted.
Alex has no plans of leaving Jeopardy! despite the news. “As long as I can walk out and greet the audience and the contestants and run the game I’m happy,” he said.
