In June 2015, Lisa Smith dropped her 17-month-old daughter Mia off at her home day care provider’s house in Texas.

Later that day, her babysitter put Mia down for a nap — but she didn’t wake up. Mia had stopped breathing and her face and toes turned purple.

While the babysitter frantically performed CPR, her husband called 911 and Mia was rushed to the hospital. Lisa was still at work when she received the horrific phone call, alerting her to the fact her daughter never woke up from her nap.

Tragically, Mia passed away two days later of “positional asphyxia,” meaning her head was in a dangerous position while she slept, leaving her unable to breathe.

It wasn’t until investigators gave Lisa all the information that the babysitter’s fatal mistake came to light.

“We knew from day one there was no malicious intent, but she made a series of wrong decisions that cost my daughter her life,” Lisa said in an interview.

Now, Lisa and her husband, Chad, are sharing their dire warning with parents and guardians everywhere — because this tragedy was completely preventable.
