When Sophia Thomas turned eight years old, she thought she’d be spending it watching movies with her friends. But the little girl from the UK had her hopes dashed by the pandemic.
Sophia was heartbroken to have to cancel the celebration; just another stressor for parents, finding the right way to explain to their children the state of the world.
“When you’re eight-years-old, a birthday party is the biggest thing in the world, so to have it taken away was really crushing for her,” her dad Rob told SWNS.
Still, Rob and his wife Alison wanted to give their daughter the best birthday they possibly could under these conditions. The trio had been cooped up together like everyone else, searching for fun ways to interact and stay social.
Rob and Alison are part of a Facebook group with other neighbors who live on their street, which proved very useful at a time like this. They asked the group if anyone would be willing to wish Sophia a happy birthday, or drop a card on their porch.
In the heartwarming clip below, the entire neighborhood steps up in a big way, going above and beyond for the birthday girl.
“It wasn’t intended to be something to cheer up the nation but I’m glad if it brings a smile to people’s faces during this time,” Rob says.
