A new Musical Is the Best-Ever TikTok Musical

A theater fanatic’s song on TikTok went viral and turned into an entire musical set in a grocery store.

Daniel Muertzlufft, @danieljmertzlufft, decided to create his own TikTok musical, titled “Grocery Store: A New Musical,” which starts with his lyrics about a couple arguing in a grocery store. In the lyrics, he wonders whether they should continue their relationship.

He sings, standing in a grocery store filter: “I love you, but I don’t know if I like you anymore.”

However, he’s also being facetious and acknowledging the stereotypes and tropes of musical theater. So he adds overlay captions: “Add high notes for diva tenor playing the role.”

His gag blew up into something else as people started adding themselves to his musical. University of San Diego theater student, @another.blonde, added her vocals as the girlfriend begging him to stay.

That wasn’t it. @kelseyjadebacon added herself as the child, which fundamentally changed the tenor of the entire arrangement. By the end, it is as if the original character is walking away from his family.

Then, an employee is assessing their situation and wondering why this is occurring during her shift.

And of course, it would swiftly devolve into the absurd. By the end, a can of soup and automated doorbells chimed in.

The collaboration would get a rave review from singer and musical theater star, Marisha Wallace.

“…I can say is this is f-ing brilliance. I’m in a puddle. This is Broadway and West End approved,” she tweeted about the ad-hoc musical.
