For many people, art is a way of expression. And paintings, such as murals, can often bring a town and community together. That may be why Black Lives Matter paintings have started becoming visible throughout the country.

The street art first appeared outside of the White House, and it made quite the statement. With bold yellow letters, it got the point across that Black people needed to be treated equally, and with respect. While the true change comes in modifying policies and retraining authority figures — as well as citizens — to not hold any type of racial bias, every step counts.

After the White House mural’s appearance, similar murals sprung up in big cities. Forbes reports that throughout California, they’re visible in cities like San Francisco, Sacramento, Oakland, and Hollywood. That said, here’s the problem with paint — it can easily be destroyed.

Sadly, that’s what one white couple did to a newly painted mural in Martinez, California. Just hours after it arrived, a woman splashed a can of black paint over the “L” in Black. Using a roller, she attempted to hide the letter completely. A male who was with her told onlookers, “No one wants Black Lives Matter here,” per The Washington Post.

Both their words and actions send a hateful message. And aside from their opinions on the movement, what they did was considered vandalism. While caught on film, the couple has yet to be identified.

Watch the video to see how the residents of Martinez have supported the movement, with their own chalk drawings that showcase love.
